Halloween Hair Color Ideas You Can Test on Your Own Photo

These Halloween hair color ideas are meant for one night, not one season, so the expensive mistake is buying the wrong can of spray or the wrong wig. Upload a photo, pick one of the six shades below, and AI Hair Color Changer recolours only your hair while your face, haircut, outfit and background stay put.

Six Halloween hair colours to try on

All six were tested on the same fictional portrait. "Use this look" loads the instruction into the editor below with Ideogram 4.5 Edit; upload one clear photo where your hair is visible and run it. You can also copy a prompt and change the shade words.

  • Woman with long straight hair recoloured deep violet fading to lilac ends, face and denim shirt unchanged

    Witchy Violet with Lilac Tips

Deep violet from root to mid-length melting into lilac ends. The colour behind this year's purple braids trend, tried on your hair as it is.

    Hair colour prompt
Change only the hair colour to a deep witchy violet purple from the roots through the mid-lengths, blending softly into lighter lilac lavender on the last few centimetres of the ends, like a vivid semi-permanent dye on pre-lightened hair. Realistic hair with natural shine and visible individual strands. Avoid: recolouring skin, eyebrows or clothing, adding hats, wigs, props, text, logos or watermarks. Keep the same person exactly: identical face, facial features, skin tone, makeup, expression, eyes and eyebrows. Keep the haircut, hair length, hairline, parting and texture unchanged. Keep clothing, pose, framing, lighting and background unchanged.
  • Woman with long straight hair recoloured bright acid slime green, same face, denim shirt and beige wall

    Toxic Slime Green

A saturated acid green with a hint of yellow, the colour of glow sticks and lab-goo props. Loud on its own, perfect with a mad-scientist coat.

    Hair colour prompt
Change only the hair colour to a vivid toxic slime green: a bright saturated acid green with a slight yellow cast, even from roots to ends, slightly deeper green underneath and a brighter lime where light hits the top layer, like a neon semi-permanent dye or a strong temporary colour spray. Realistic hair with natural shine and visible individual strands. Avoid: recolouring skin, eyebrows or clothing, adding hats, wigs, props, text, logos or watermarks. Keep the same person exactly: identical face, facial features, skin tone, makeup, expression, eyes and eyebrows. Keep the haircut, hair length, hairline, parting and texture unchanged. Keep clothing, pose, framing, lighting and background unchanged.
  • Woman whose long hair goes from blood-orange at the roots to black at the ends, face and clothes unchanged

    Blood-Orange to Black Ombré

Glowing blood-orange at the roots and crown melting into inky black ends. Reads as embers going out; works on dark hair because the ends stay dark.

    Hair colour prompt
Change only the hair colour to a reverse ombré: a rich blood-orange (deep red-orange like the fruit) at the roots, crown and upper lengths, blending smoothly through dark copper around the shoulders into glossy jet black on the ends, with no harsh line between the colours. Realistic hair with natural shine and visible individual strands. Avoid: recolouring skin, eyebrows or clothing, adding hats, wigs, props, text, logos or watermarks. Keep the same person exactly: identical face, facial features, skin tone, makeup, expression, eyes and eyebrows. Keep the haircut, hair length, hairline, parting and texture unchanged. Keep clothing, pose, framing, lighting and background unchanged.
  • Woman with long straight hair recoloured pale ghostly white-silver, her face, brown eyes and denim shirt unchanged

    Ghost White-Silver

An almost-white silver with cool lowlights so it keeps dimension. Pairs with any ghost, spirit or ice-queen idea and needs no other costume to read.

    Hair colour prompt
Change only the hair colour to a ghostly white-silver: a very pale icy white with a cool silver sheen, a few slightly darker pewter-silver lowlights underneath for depth, and no yellow or brassy tones anywhere, like a fully toned white-silver dye or a white-silver costume wig in the same cut. Realistic hair with natural shine and visible individual strands. Avoid: recolouring skin, eyebrows or clothing, adding hats, wigs, props, text, logos or watermarks. Keep the same person exactly: identical face, facial features, skin tone, makeup, expression, eyes and eyebrows. Keep the haircut, hair length, hairline, parting and texture unchanged. Keep clothing, pose, framing, lighting and background unchanged.
  • Woman with long hair split dyed pumpkin orange on one side of the parting and black on the other

    Pumpkin and Black Split Dye

Pumpkin orange on one side of the parting, glossy black on the other. The most Halloween of the six, and easy to copy with two cans of spray.

    Hair colour prompt
Change only the hair colour to a split dye divided exactly at the existing parting: all hair on the person's right side becomes a bright pumpkin orange, all hair on the left side becomes glossy jet black, with a clean sharp line at the parting and each colour even from roots to ends. Realistic hair with natural shine and visible individual strands. Avoid: recolouring skin, eyebrows or clothing, adding hats, wigs, props, text, logos or watermarks. Keep the same person exactly: identical face, facial features, skin tone, makeup, expression, eyes and eyebrows. Keep the haircut, hair length, hairline, parting and texture unchanged. Keep clothing, pose, framing, lighting and background unchanged.
  • Woman with long straight hair recoloured deep midnight blue with fine silver-blue shimmer, face and outfit unchanged

    Starlit Midnight Blue

A blue so dark it looks black indoors, with fine silver-blue glints that catch the light like stars. The quiet choice for a witch, a night sky or a party.

    Hair colour prompt
Change only the hair colour to a starlit midnight blue: a deep inky navy blue that reads almost black in the shadows, glowing sapphire blue where the light hits, scattered with very fine strands of sparkling silver-blue shimmer like hair tinsel or glitter spray catching the light. Realistic hair with natural shine and visible individual strands. Avoid: recolouring skin, eyebrows or clothing, adding hats, wigs, props, text, logos or watermarks. Keep the same person exactly: identical face, facial features, skin tone, makeup, expression, eyes and eyebrows. Keep the haircut, hair length, hairline, parting and texture unchanged. Keep clothing, pose, framing, lighting and background unchanged.

The woman in these examples does not exist: her portrait was generated for this page and each shade was applied to it during testing, with an open image model (FLUX.2 klein) for five shades and ChatGPT image generation for the split dye. On the site, Ideogram 4.5 Edit recolours your own photo, so your result will differ.

In short

  • Six Halloween shades: witchy violet, slime green, a blood-orange to black ombré, ghost white-silver, a pumpkin and black split dye, and starlit midnight blue.
  • Each prompt changes the colour only; the site keeps your haircut, face, makeup, clothing and background.
  • Use the preview to choose between a temporary spray, hair chalk, a semi-permanent dye or a wig.
  • Your first colour is free for new accounts; each one after that uses 2 credits.

Pick the product after the preview

Most Halloween hair colour comes in four forms, and the preview tells you which one you need. If you like the colour but would only wear it for one night, a temporary spray or hair chalk is enough. If you want it for a week of parties, a semi-permanent dye fades out over several washes. If your hair is long, dark or you do not want to touch it at all, a wig in the same cut is the cleanest option.

  • Temporary colour spray: best for slime green, the pumpkin and black split dye and the starlit blue shimmer. Spray in thin layers from about 20 cm away and protect your collar.
  • Hair chalk or colour wax: good for the violet tips and the orange part of the ombré, where you only colour the ends or the top section.
  • Semi-permanent dye: shows true colour only on blonde or pre-lightened hair. On dark brown hair it usually gives a tint, not the bright shade in the preview.
  • Wig: the only way to get ghost white-silver on dark hair without bleaching. Use the preview to choose length and tone, then match the wig to it.

Why the preview is brighter than a spray on dark hair

The editor shows the colour as it would look on hair that can take it. Real dark hair cannot always: a green or violet spray on dark brown hair looks deeper and patchier, and white-silver spray looks grey. That does not make the preview wrong, it tells you the target. If you are dark-haired and love a pale shade, plan for a wig or a white base spray under the colour, and expect two or three coats.

Darker shades are the forgiving ones. Starlit midnight blue and the black half of the split dye read well on any base colour, and the blood-orange ombré keeps its ends black, so only the top half needs lifting.

About the braids trend

Purple witch braids are on this year's costume list thanks to the Lily Love Braids character from Poppy Playtime. AI Hair Color Changer changes colour only and keeps your haircut, so it will not braid loose hair for you. What it can do is show whether that violet suits your skin tone. If you already wear braids, upload a photo with them and the witchy violet look recolours each braid; if not, try the shade on your loose hair and then pick braided extensions or a braided wig in the same violet.

Get a cleaner result from your photo

Use one clear photo with one person, hair visible and not under a hat or hood, in daylight rather than coloured party lighting, which the model may read as part of your current colour. Hair in front of the shoulders shows more of the colour than hair tucked behind. For the split dye, a visible parting matters: the instruction divides the colour at the line that is already there.

Try the same photo with two or three shades back to back. Every result is saved to your account history, which makes a quick side-by-side before you decide.

Frequently asked questions

Which Halloween hair color ideas work best on dark hair?

Starlit midnight blue, the blood-orange to black ombré and the black side of the pumpkin split dye all keep most of the hair dark, so they are easiest to copy with a spray or chalk. Ghost white-silver and pale violet are better done with a wig unless your hair is already light.

Will the AI change my haircut or my face?

It should not. Every instruction on this site includes a clause to keep the same face, skin tone, makeup, haircut, length, parting and background, and Ideogram 4.5 Edit runs in high precision mode, restoring areas it was not asked to change. Check the result anyway before sharing it.

Can I type my own Halloween shade?

Yes. Edit the loaded instruction or use the custom colour field on the homepage editor, for example "candy-corn yellow to orange" or "blood moon red". The identity part is added automatically.

How much does it cost to try these colours?

New accounts get one free hair colour change after signing in. After that each colour uses 2 credits, and the cost is shown before you submit. Viewing your earlier results is free.

Can I upload a photo of my child for a costume idea?

Only photos you have permission to use. Do not upload photos of minors without a guardian's consent. For kids' costumes, a parent can try the shade on their own photo to judge the colour first.
